The short version
This site sets no advertising cookies and no analytics cookies. The only cookies it uses are ones that make a specific feature work, and you can refuse all of them without losing access to any article.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, and which your browser sends back on later visits. It lets a site remember something between page loads. Cookies are not programs and cannot read your computer; the concern with them is that they can be used to recognise you over time.
What this site sets
Consent record
When you answer the cookie banner, your choice is stored so you are not asked again on every page. Set by the consent tool. Typical lifetime one year. Refusing this is possible, but you will then be asked on each visit.
Page caching
The caching system may set a cookie to determine whether you should be served a stored copy of a page or a freshly generated one. It contains no information about you.
Comment details
If you leave a comment, WordPress offers to remember the name and email you entered so you do not retype them. This only happens if you leave a comment, and only if you accept the option. Typical lifetime one year.
Logging in
Accounts are closed to the public, so this applies only to the site’s own administrators. Session cookies are set at login and are necessary for the software to function.
What this site does not set
- No analytics or measurement cookies.
- No advertising or behavioural targeting cookies.
- No social media cookies.
- No cross-site tracking of any kind.
The site also loads no fonts, scripts, avatars or images from other companies’ servers, so visiting a page does not cause a request to any third party that could set a cookie of its own.
Refusing or removing them
Through the banner. Use the customise option to refuse anything that is not strictly necessary. Every article remains readable.
Through your browser. Every browser can block or delete cookies, either generally or per site. The setting is usually under privacy or site data.
In Tor Browser. Cookies are cleared when you close the browser, and the New Identity option clears them immediately. If you read this site through Tor Browser, nothing set here survives your session unless you deliberately keep it.
Changes
If the cookies used here change, this page is updated and the date at the top revised.
